The product called TOPO-NAVIGATOR is a software tool
that runs on a PDA or a smartphone equipped with a
camera and possibly a GPS. The user points the phone/PDA
camera towards an outdoors location and the system
automatically displays the name of the scene correctly
overlaid on the building. Alternatively, it shows a map
(bird’s eyeview) with information on spatial content.
The difference to current GPS supported maps is the
immersion of the user, the fact that the scene speaks by
itself, and the functionality even in areas without GPS
perception. GPS is used only to constraint the search
for the location. Data are accessed through a 3G
cellular connection or a WLAN if available. Additional
graphical content like overlay of the scenery as it was
one century ago is supported as well as services like
translation of signs.
Related applications concern environments where the user
inquires information of her location and surroundings.
TOPO-NAVIGATOR does not only find location but labels
also all places in a picture hat has recognized and
provides hyperlinks to up-to-date information about
them. The first target application is tourism and tours
of cities and larger scale historical places. Additional
applications involve guides to delivery couriers, aid to
elderly people with weak memory, and as an annotation
tool for forensics.
